O'Keeffe has been compared to an extraordinary variety of Modernists, including Picasso, Magritte, Miró, Kandinsky, De Chirico, Dali, Avery, Picabia, Gleizes, Matisse, Cézanne, Pollock, Rothko, and Louis. As the list suggests, Wölfflin's simple but useful distinction between the linear and the painterly proves problematic in her case. and Dali are primarily linear, what is O'Keeffe? Most would spontaneously answer: a colorist. This stems from the commonplace association between color itself and avant-garde liberties of expression and abstraction, what John Russell called, referring in particular to the changes occurring between 1890 and 1905, the "emancipation of color" in conjunction with the "emancipation of art." It seems a convenient rubric within which a consideration of O'Keeffe as Modernist might start, but the argument of history shows that it is an oversimplification.
